1. What is Speed Dating?
Speed Dating is an exciting, quick and non-pressured way to meet singles. In one evening, you'll meet a variety of people, in brief, individual one-on-one conversations. There are a variety of companies that provide a 3 hour party with everything from 3 minute dates with up to 35 people and up to 10 minute dates with 8-10 people.

2. Who started the Speed Dating concept?

Aish HaTorah, an international Jewish educational network, created SpeedDating and owns the service mark SpeedDating. There are several companies that have "knocked off" their own brand of speed dating concept. Around the world there are now hundreds of speed dating type events with hundreds of companies that promote: FAST DATES, MINI DATES, 3 Minute Dates, 8 minute dating, 25 dates, etc.

3. What are the advantages of Speed Dating?

The system guarantees you have mini dates -- without the need for uncomfortable ice-breaking. You avoid nightmare 2-3-hour blind dates, expensive dinners and lunches with people where there is no chemistry.

4. How does Speed Dating work?

A group of singles - an equal number of men and women -- gather at a cafe or bar that has been rented out for the evening. The cafe is filled with "tables for two," and each table is numbered. You will have a set amount of time of 3-10 minutes depending on the company. Participants are also given suggested topics to help break the ice.

At the end of the set time, there is usually a DJ or MC that either rings a bell or plays music between rounds to let you know to move on to the next date. Participants are asked to write on a form if they would be interested in seeing this person again. This entails simply checking a 'yes' or 'no' box, "hit" or "miss" and in some Speed Dating companies, "date", "friend", "miss". The men then get up from their seats and move to the next table, where another woman is waiting to meet them.
Depending on the company, after a number of mini-dates, there's a 15-20-minute break. This is a good time to enjoy some appetizers and meet anyone else at the event who you've had your eye on that may not meet you due to the number of attendees. Remember to write down the names of the people you meet during intermission on your score card. After the break you'll 2-3 more rounds.

If both sides checked off the 'yes' box, organizers let participants know within 48 hours which matches have been made, and give each side the other's email address, or email address and phone number.

3-10 minutes doesn't seem like a lot of time, is it enough?

Remember, you're not on a date, you're on a mini-date! This is a great way to see if you'd be interested in a full date or just more conversation later. Sometimes 3-10 minutes is way too long if you know what we mean. But in 3-10 minutes most people can tell if there's physical chemistry, if they like the way someone speaks, if the person is mature and intelligent, and if they want to know more. At which point they'd select YES on the score card and hopefully the other person would do the same!

5. Is it advisable to attend a Speed Dating more than once?
Yes, if you don't meet that special someone the first time around. You can try a different company or wait a few months in hopes that there will be new people. Some companies attract approximately 50-90% new faces to each event. In addition, due to the large number of participants, you may meet only 30% of the participants in any one event.   Some companies actually keep a database and prevent you from signing up for a party where there are a high number of attendees that you have met previously to ensure a satisfying experience when you do attend.
This definitely will allow you to meet all new people at each and every event you attend!

6. What are the disadvantages to Speed Dating?

The company does not screen attendees as part of the registration process.   You attend a party with full knowledge you will be meeting most of the party attendees of the opposite sex.  It is assumed that participants are single and the age range specified for the party, and if a niche party such as Christian or Jewish, that attendees are that faith.   You may have a great evening with 5-10 matches at one party and then come up practically empty handed after the next.    Just like internet dating, you are meeting TOTAL STRANGERS. There are no filters except for if you attend a niche party such as Jewish, Christian, Single No Kids, and Single with Kids.  Parties are typically advertised as reaching professionals.  But, attendees are from all walks of life: blue collar, white collar, professionals, educated, uneducated, students, skinny, fit, overweight, sharp dressers, poor dressers, sophisticated, country types, never married, divorced, single parents.

What are the statistics?
Most Speed Dating companies claim a proven track record of success.  Various companies claim that over 50% of participants meet someone with whom there is mutual interest in another date.

Is anything provided at the event?

Typically, the company will  provide scorecards, pens and nametags. Typically drinks are out of your own pocket.  Some events may provide appetizers prior to the start of the event.

Can you pay at the door?  When should you sign up?

You must sign up in advance.  Sign up as soon as you know you can attend an event.  Most cities have high demand for parties.  The women typically fill up a party much faster than the men.

What should you wear?

Dress to impress.  Don't wear jeans, shorts, flip flops or sneakers, no matter how casual the facilitator says to dress.  You are there to find dates.  Dress like you are going out on a date.  For more tips go to First Impressions

What should I not talk about at the dating event?

In order to create a safe, comfortable and enjoyable evening for everyone, there are 3 subjects that you are not allowed to discuss at any time during an dating event.

  1. You are not allowed to ask anyone for their contact information. This includes their phone number, last name, e-mail address, business card, or their address.
  2. You are not allowed to ask anyone if they would like to have another date.
  3. You are not allowed to ask sexually explicit questions, use lewd language, or say anything that might be interpreted as threatening or as sexual harassment. Please be polite and respectful!

If you meet someone who you would like to go out with, you may inform them that you’ll be putting their name on your score card, but  don’t pressure them to put your name on their card. If they are interested they will put your name on their card. Remember, everyone at the event is interested in meeting people to date. If you’re having an mini date with someone who you’re not interested in dating again, take the opportunity to learn something from them. Just because there’s no love interest, you might be surprised by how interesting people can be if you ask the right questions!
